Faith in our healthcare workers

I have faith in our healthcare workers.

Here’s why –

Before I launched my executive coaching practice in 2019, I spent the previous 9 years in healthcare at two award-winning health systems that were the best of the best.  I saw up close and personal the hearts and minds of physicians, clinicians and leaders in the complex and demanding environment that it is.

I worked with people who showed up every day prepared for trauma, prepared to care for the most fragile among us, and who gave the strongest version of themselves on a daily basis.

I know this because I worked in the health system that received the 2nd MERS patient to present in the US several years ago.  At the time, the medical community was not fully knowledgeable how that corona virus was transmitted.  What I observed was the team pulled together, managed the crisis, and learned what they needed to prepare for any future events.

Then came the Pulse nightclub tragedy.  In the nights that followed, the ER docs that handled the crisis still attended the leadership program they were enrolled in with me.  I saw firsthand their courage and leadership; and the dedication they had for patient care, the team and the greater good.  They led through the crisis with courage.

What these healthcare leaders did every day was prepare for unforeseen events, and showed up ready.  They prepared through clinical, quality and safety training.  They prepared through team building and leadership development.  The Chief Quality Officers and other leaders made sure that the organization wasn’t just waiting for a mistake to happen to learn, but it was something that they focused on every day.

I was coaching a healthcare executive last week, and she was describing how they were preparing for Covid 19.  She was calm and ready.

I hope it offers you comfort to know that our healthcare systems and leaders are focused and dedicated to our health and wellbeing, sometimes over their own individual needs.  I am thankful that I got to see true inspirational leadership during times of crisis, and the importance of continuous learning.  I believe it has made me a better #coach.
